Training as a health and nursing assistant
As a health and nursing assistant, you are the right-hand man of the health and nursing staff. You look after the sick and their families, help prevent further illnesses, treat wounds and support the recovery of your charges. Your training as a health and nursing assistant is divided into several academic and one practical phase. While the basic knowledge is taught at the vocational schools, your internships in hospitals and retirement homes give you the opportunity to apply and consolidate your knowledge in practice. Depending on the federal state, training to become a health and nursing assistant takes one to two years full-time. Part-time training takes up to four years.

How does the training as a health and nursing assistant work?
During your training as a health and nursing assistant, you will attend classes at a health school. There you will be taught medical expertise, which will be reinforced with practical exercises. To give you an insight into your future real working life right from the start, you will take part in internships in hospitals, clinics, specialist practices or health centers – practice becomes serious. You will accompany doctors and nurses and get a real impression of the daily work.
You will learn how patients and of course their relatives are cared for, because as a nursing assistant you are their good soul and contact person. You will learn how to apply bandages and how to prevent infections and thrombosis. As a health and nursing assistant you have to react very quickly in emergencies. During your training you will also learn how to act in life-threatening situations. Of course, things are not always so dramatic, in everyday life it is mainly about making the patients’ lives as easy as possible and helping and supporting them with dressing, hygiene and examinations.
How much does a health and nursing assistant earn during and after training?
The training to become a health and nursing assistant is organized at school and varies from state to state. Whether you receive remuneration therefore depends on the state and your vocational school. It is therefore possible that you will receive a salary during your training to become a nursing assistant. The minimum wage for trainees will be 649 euros gross per month from 2024. In the second year of training, it will be 766 euros gross.
After your training as a health and nursing assistant, your salary depends on whether you are paid according to the public rate or not. If you are in the public sector, for example at a municipal hospital, you will be placed in pay groups 4 to 6. In this case, your salary is based on how long you have been with the company and the level of your qualifications. The longer you are with your employer, the more your salary will rise. If you invest in further training and are given more demanding tasks, this can also have a positive effect on your bank balance. Your starting salary as a nursing assistant is around 2,000 euros gross , and you can increase this income to up to 3,300 euros gross per month.
